With all of the laws and regulations set forth by the Bush administration over the past eight years, and the
incredible loss of an American citizen’s freedoms, the question is obviously going to be raised, what can be done? An article from Memphis newspaper, The Commercial Appeal, concentrates on what can be done to try and rescue the country from all out executive rule, by bringing civic and government education back to the schools. The author wrote the article after covering a speech given by the president of the American Bar Association supporting those ideals. The speech, reported here, pointed out that civics and government classes are being phased out of the high school curriculum all over the country in favor of more and higher level math and science classes just so the schools can keep up with standardized testing scores. The speaker makes note of the how Americans will not stand up and disagree with policies, nor will judges make any rulings that will take criticism. At the end, both the speaker and the author urge readers to understand the government we live under, take notice, and get involved.
I am using this article because all of my previous sources have been explaining how and why the Bush administration has been gaining power. This article serves to show that there are other people out there fighting this situation. They give the best possible advice. Get informed. That is more than half the battle. If everyone in America, or even half the people in America, knew just some of the things covered here in my research and some other things going on in Washington, there would changes. People simply would not stand for it, and at that point, we would have the numbers to really do something about it.
